I love my home office
Working from home has become the norm. Whilst the phenomena isn't new, it has become the defacto alternative under the current circumstances. But in some countries and companies, alternating between working in the office and from home is a common practice.
WFH isn't going anywhere any time soon. In a survey conducted by the University of Sydney published in September 2020, it was reported that three-quarters of workers believe companies will support WFH (1). It's not surprising, then, that some have moved from the dining table to a more permanent room or corner in the house. If you're looking for ideas to do up your home office, read on.
In this article, you'll discover ideas to put together a 'working' home office design. But take note - they aren't designed to bring the office home. More importantly, they'll help you stay effective and efficient as well as creative.
1. Location
Not everyone has the luxury of a spare room or space in the house to be used as an office. While it is ideal, it isn't a necessary condition. Of greater importance is to choose a room or space that doesn't squeeze you into a corner. At the same time, try to stay away from high traffic flow areas, which strikes out the kitchen table.
2. It doesn't have to be functional
Everyone loves to work in a great looking office. It brings a 'smile to the mind'. Where relevant, the look and feel of your home office should complement the decor of your house, so avoid rushing to get the furniture and fittings and don't sacrifice form for function.
3. Choose the right chair
Do not simply grab a chair in the house and turn it into your office chair. Regardless of your working style, you'll be spending hours on it. The last thing you want is to use the same chair for meals or watching TV. Your home office chair mustn't only be ergonomically comfortable, but it has to represent a break from the non-work routine at home. And when you're away from your home office, you'd want to be seated on a different chair.
4. Get IT right
Nothing is more frustrating than being late for a meeting because your internet connection hung up on you or your printer failed to print. If you're not an IT-geek, it's best you engage one to get you all wired well and good. And while you're at it, work to bring order to your cables and wires. From the humble rubber band to cable ties, keeping the 'connections neat' is not only pleasing to the eye but can avoid accidental trips.
5. Lighting
You might be an early bird or late-night warrior. If you are either, or even both, investing in good lighting is critical. Don't work in the dark as it places unnecessary strain on your well-being. After all, it has been said that WFH actually adds more working hours to your day than working in an office. Ironically, without the distraction of colleagues and meetings, you're likely to stretch your working hours each day.
6. Stay inspired
From table accessories and prized knickknacks to photos of loved ones, personal items can be the mojo you need to pull through the day. They create a warm, fuzzy feeling to help you stay inspired and creative. A dash of out-of-the-box thinking can trigger the solution you've been looking for.
