De-clutter your space - de-clutter your mind
Are you bored of where you live? In recent times, some of us have been spending a lot more time indoors - that can lead to monotony, as well as clutter!
It's only natural to accumulate items in the space we are using, and that's why we need to refresh our homes and ourselves by clearing out clutter. In this blog, we are going to cut to the chase, and offer some tips on tackling clutter, as well as explain why it's important. Read on!
Item by item
When going through your cupboards, drawers and storerooms, take it item by item, rather than having a 'mass cull'. You need a system, and a sensible way of going about stripping down your possessions can be to form three piles - a 'give away', 'sell' and 'keep' pile. Whether it's tools, DVDs, leisure equipment or clothing - you just have to decide between the three options. As you shift out some belongings and are rewarded with more room, you might notice that your stress levels begin to drop. Take a leaf out of the book of the minimalists who swear by owning as few possessions as possible!
Areas for attention
Don't limit your clutter purge to one room of the house - such as a loft or bedroom. Each room holds its own potential in your quest to kill clutter. How about the bathroom? Get rid of those skincare products which you ditched months ago, and try to limit the number of soaps and shampoos to those you actually need.
Then there's the bedroom. Is there a pile-up of books which you have read already? And are you harbouring a whole wardrobe of clothes which very rarely make an appearance? Your hallways and reception rooms should also come under the microscope. Is it a tough job to move from room to room? Remove pile-ups of coats, shoes or other outdoor items that might be constricting movement. Your kitchen clear-out can focus initially on removing items from surfaces and storing them away in an organised way. In the process, you might find kitchen utensils that you simply don't use, or have more than one of.
Controlling your clutter
What's the point of going to the trouble of clearing all your clutter when you are going to run into the same problem further down the line? Make a promise to yourself to keep your clutter under control, by not buying anything new unless you are getting rid of something old at the same time. And do your best to cut out purchasing items that are merely 'nice to haves', or that you might use a couple of times and then forget about.
Time for a shakeup?
Another way in which you can make room in your home is to change the layout. You might be amazed just how much more of a spacious, stress-free environment you can make by switching around your furniture and even losing some furniture or appliances that you don't need. If you are struggling to walk freely around a room, or between rooms, that can be a sure-fire sign that you could do with changing your layout to create more space.
Appreciate your uncluttered environment
Whether you are decluttering for feng shui purposes, or simply to give yourself more space to unwind, you should reap the benefits of a few hours spent clearing and organising your property. Decluttering can improve self-esteem as it is a way of practising self-care, and it is also an effective solution to improve your lifestyle and wellbeing.
