Home for the holidays
Home for the holidays? Here’s how to get the most out of your staycation
With the current situation around global health, many would-be travellers at home over the holidays, it’s important to still let yourself get into the festive spirit and make the most out of your staycation. A holiday can still be a holiday wherever you are in the world, even if you’re stuck at home.
In fact, a staycation can be a great idea. It’s more affordable, it doesn’t come with jet lag, and you don’t need to work out how to keep the kids entertained on a long flight. Done right, a holiday from home can be perfect.
Here at Jarvis Interiors, we’re all about using creative interior design to improve people’s lives, health, and well-being. So, we’ve put together a guide for how to get the most out of your holiday from home.
Bring the holiday aesthetic into your home
No matter the time of year, you can invite the holiday aesthetic into your home. For the Christmas holidays, bring in pine trees and branches to decorate the corners of your home. Not only do these shift the colour tone to something rustic but, combined with warm coloured lighting, can make for a cosy ambience in every room.
On the other hand, if you’re enjoying the sunshine outside, why not bring it into your home? Use beige muslin and drapery around your windows to create a warmer natural light and echo beach cabin vibes.
Experiment with light therapy
Fairy lights and LED strips are one thing, but have you tried experimenting with different light therapy additions in your home? The psychology behind the light in your home is well-studied and concludes that natural light can not only regulate your sleep patterns and elevate mood, but bright and saturated hues can intensify emotion.
To prepare your home for the holidays, bring in bold colours around your lamps to draw on those saturated hues and get yourself into the holiday spirit.
Plan some exotic meals around the dinner table
If you’re missing going abroad and trying new foods and delicacies, then there is nothing stopping you from bringing them into your home. Plan a special couple of days in the week to go all out with a meal from somewhere around the world. Combine your meal with iconic music from your country of choice and a glass of wine or local spirit to top it all off.
You could look at treating yourself to some crockery or a dining table cover in the patterns of the country you’re missing. For example, Moroccan henna plates, red geometric Chinese place settings or South and Southeast Asian chopsticks.
Indulge the senses with music and fragrances
Whether you have a stereo, sound system, or even a television you can keep on low volume throughout the day, try listening to a playlist from a country you would love to visit. By setting the ambience with some iconic music from that country, you'll feel as if you’re dancing through the streets.
Go even further with some incense or candles flavoured like foods or plants from that country. For example, something rich in pine for a Scandinavian forest or something spicy for an Arab spice market. There's plumeria for Hawaii, jasmine for Capri and sunflowers for Amsterdam to consider too.
Jarvis Interiors cares about making interior design improve people’s lives, their health, and their well-being. We use colour, sound, and light therapy to enhance natural environments in the home and create a sense of peace, excitement, and restoration for home spaces.
